RIVER VALLEY ROUNDUP RACE UPDATE

Hello race participants. I am sorry to report a bad toss. We had the birds loft flying for over 1 hour before we started training this year. We taught the birds to eat and drink in the shipping crates. We gave them 2 tosses from 100 yards. 3 tosses from 1/2 mile. 4 tosses from 1 1/2 miles. 4 or 5 tosses from 5 miles. We tossed from 15 miles with very good results. All tosses in small groups with time in between to ensure the birds weren't just following the other birds. After I sent out the last update we tossed from 15 miles again. I set up the clocks and prepared to video the birds arriving and trapping in. At 1 1/2 hour 1 bird trapped in. by the end of 2 days we were missing 18 birds. This is with only half of the birds tossed as we didn't load up the other half when we saw the first half wasn't doing well. We waited a few days and tossed the other half from 15 miles. After 1 1/2 hours 1 bird was here. At the end of 3 days we were missing about 28 birds. In addition 2 birds have flown into a wire and are too injured to continue. Ross Hull from Wing and a Prayer Loft called and told me that ALL of the races and flyers he knows of have lost a huge amount of birds. He had his birds out to 20 miles and dropped back shorter to help some new birds to catch up. He had 3 birds home on the day. He lives in the North East of the U.S. From what I can tell the Tulsa Federation is experiencing many lost birds this year as well. The few 1 loft races I've checked out have lost many birds already. Ad Schaerlaekens says that in Holland and Belgium flyers have come to expect to lose about half of all their youngbirds. I don't know what is causing this but it seems to be world wide. I believe it is environmental. Natural or man made I don't know. Conspiracy theorists can check out HAARP. The governments effort to affect the weather has supposedly caused many problems such as with migratory birds. We will regroup and start tossing the birds from 5 miles and work out slowly. In addition we are starting another respiratory treatment. We will post an another inventory list next week.

RIVER VALLEY ROUNDUP RACE UPDATE

Hello race participants. Great news! We seem to be over the hump! Since the last update, we flagged the birds for about 1 hour 3 days in a row. The temp cooled down and the birds felt great. Some stayed out for 1 1/2 hours or more. We tossed again from 5 miles (4th toss) in 8 small groups. All the groups made it home in 8 to 10 minutes. Today we tossed from 15 miles in 8 small groups and the birds made it home in about 30 minutes each. 2 groups missed and came back from the north but were only an additional 15 minutes. As always several birds messed up and came in even later. I don't mind some of the birds making mistakes now as I believe these birds probably learn more than the others. As long as it's not the same ones every time. My plan is to toss several more times from 15 miles and then move out further. We will post a training result soon so you can see how well the birds are doing. When we post the results I will also post the video of the birds trapping in.

RIVER VALLEY ROUNDUP RACE UPDATE

Hello race participants. I posted an updated inventory list on the website (rivervalleyroundup.com) today. Pull up the website and place the arrow over the results tab. You will have 2 options. Race results or training results. Click on training results. On the right side of the page look for "Show Breeders Clockings". Under that you will see "Select Breeder". Click on "Select Breeder". Scroll up and down as needed untill you find your loft. Click on your loft to see which of your birds are here at this time. Many birds are going through a heavy neck and body moult. We continue to toss short but the birds are not ready for long tosses. Remember that a lot of the birds came here in June and early July. We will move out a little farther after several more 5 mile tosses but will only go long when the birds show they are ready. If I rush things right now we will lose many birds. That's not going to happen! I feel like things will change in a couple more weeks. I believe since the birds are getting so many short tosses that once the moult passes and the temperature cools down that we will be able to go long with no probem. Click on the News Tab on our website to see the new release windows and stalls for the traps. This seems to have fixed the problem of missing some of the birds when a mass of pigeons comes through at the same time. I will post a picture of one of the heavy moulting pigeons in a couple of days so you can see how severe the moult is for some of the birds. We just wormed the birds with Moxidectin Plus from Siegel's for 2 days and followed that with a 7 day Trichomoniasis treatment using Berimax also from Siegel's.

RIVER VALLEY ROUNDUP RACE UPDATE

Hello race participants. We had to lock down the birds for over 1 week due to dove season. Our loft is about 1 1/2 miles from the bottoms. We had lots of gunfire! We had a bad toss last week. From what I could tell 2 groups got mixed in with flyers training to the East of here and drug our birds with them. We had over 60 birds missing at 1 point but almost all are home now.

We allowed the birds to recover and started flagging them for the last 4 days. They seem to be doing well. Many are neck and body moulting. The training tosses resume tomorrow from 5 miles. This will be their 3rd toss from there. Hopefully we will jump out to 10 miles this weekend.

We intend to clock the birds and post an inventory list hopefully on Wednesday this week. Once we get some distance on the birds we will post the training tosses more frequently.

I hope everyone's young bird season is going well. I hope everyone will discover a champion in their group.

RIVER VALLEY ROUNDUP RACE UPDATE

Hello race participants. We have been tossing the birds on short tosses with very good results. So far they have been tossed in our field 2 times, 1/2 miles several times, 1 1/2 miles 4 times, and 5 miles once. We are tossing the birds in 8 small groups with time in between each group to give them time to clear the area before the next group is released. We will be tossing the birds many times over the next few weeks.

We are making release windows next to the traps to allow many birds to go outside quickly. Right now I've been letting the birds out through the traps with the bobs raised. Once the release windows are completed in a few days (we are working on them today), we will attach some pieces on the front of the traps to create 6 tunnels. The birds are trapping so fast that they are overwhelming the 6 antennaes and a few birds are being missed. This will correct the problem. Once that happens we will begin posting trainning tosses so you can see how the birds are doing. We intend to make a short video so you can see how impressive the trapping is.

RIVER VALLEY ROUNDUP RACE UPDATE

Training has begun! Hello race participants. The birds received their 1st training toss today. We had many daybirds! Full disclosure: the toss was only from 100 yards. :) We have been training all the birds to eat and drink in the shipping crates. Now that we have accomplished that we are loading the birds into the crates and releasing them for their morning exercise. Since it was their 1st time they didn't know what to do at first. Once a bird walked out and took off they all did the same. One more time and we will take them 1/2 mile a couple of times. The birds look very healthy. We are half way through their respiratory treatment.

RIVER VALLEY ROUNDUP RACE UPDATE

Hello race participants. In 2 or 3 days you should be able to go to our website (rivervalleyroundup.com) and see the inventory of all the birds in the race. You just need to use the Results Tab. Our website guy is setting this up now. There are 225 birds on the list. In addition to the 225 birds you will find on the list, 3 other birds are here also. Those 3 birds are HIC 5984, NANZ 2243, and KAMP 5557. These birds should show up on the next inventory list. That gives us 228 birds to start training tosses with. There are a handful of birds that don't want to get up and fly at this time. We just finished treating for Trichomonas with APC Turbosole from Siegel's Pigeon Supplies. In a couple of days we will begin a 2 week resperatory treatment with Doxycycline, Tylan, and Suanovil. Hopefully this will make the difference.

Over half of the birds have been trained to eat and drink out of the shipping crates. This next week we will start training the rest. All the birds look really good at this time. The latest arrivals are now lofted in and have open loft for several hours everyday.

Everyone can expect an awesome race series this year!

RIVER VALLEY ROUNDUP RACE UPDATE

Hello race participants. I hope everyone had a happy and safe 4th of July holiday. Except for about 12 birds, all the race birds are fully lofted in, vaccinated for PMV, Salmonella, and pox. They have ETS bands on and had their 10th flights cut. Any birds with less than 4 flights moulted, we didn't cut their 10th flight because we felt it unnecessary. The last 12 birds are being lofted in now. By only cutting the 10th flights (they will be pulled on July 17th) we should be able to keep the birds going and not shut them down while the 9th and 10th flights are growing in as many of us do. We are crate training the birds (see the post on our website, rivervalleyroundup.com, by clicking on the News Tab). We feel it is very important to train the birds to drink while in the shipping crates.

PIGEON SCHOOL CONTINUES!

RIVER VALLEY ROUNDUP RACE UPDATE

Hello race participants. We are finishing another 5 day trichomonias treatment with Berimax. With all the new birds arriving from all over the U.S. including Hawaii, I feel it's best not to take any chances.

We just lofted in the last of the race birds with the exception of a very few recent arrivals. We have started putting on the ETS bands and will post an inventory soon of the birds as they come in from loft flying. This will also let us know if all the bands are working.

We have started vaccinating the birds against salmonella with the KM-1 vaccine. They get Probiotic in the water every day except for the days they have Ecol-Tonic. 1 day each week they have Herbots 4 Oils and BMT Powder on the feed. 1 day each week we pour V-8 juice on the feed and allow to soak in. Later we dry up the feed with Natural's Vitamin and Mineral Powder. Once each week we give the birds a fresh grit mixture of 4 different grits mixed together with a little activated charcoal added in. From time to time we give the birds other minerals and pik stones as well.

Our main focus up to this point has been to loft in the birds and health. We will soon change our focus to all aspects of training.

Bobby Pollock

RIVER VALLEY RACE UPDATE

Hello race participants. I hope everyone enjoyed their holiday weekend. We continue to receive more birds each week. Several flyers are shipping this week and next. The birds are doing good at this time. More than half are lofted in and go out almost eveyday. We have set new records for rainfall in our state and it continues to rain most days. In between showers we try to get the birds outside and let them fly. We are trap training several more groups and plan to have them out for their 1st time in a couple of days. Thank you to all that have sent your fine birds to our race this year. We are well aware of the hard work that went into raising them. We will do everything we can to keep them healthy, happy, and ready to compete in the upcoming race series. We will put on the ETS bands soon and publish a list of all the birds.

Bobby Pollock
